IconPokemon Champions April 8, 2026 Release: How to Prepare NOW with Pokemon HOME Transfers

The Pokémon Company has officially announced that Pokémon Champions will launch on Nintendo Switch in April 8, 2026, marking a significant shift in the competitive Pokémon landscape. The mobile version (iOS and Android) is scheduled for release later in summer 2026. For players looking to get ahead, early preparation—particularly through Pokémon HOME transfers—offers a significant competitive advantage.

1. Release Date and Platform Availability

Platform Release Window Notes
Nintendo Switch April 8, 2026 Free-to-start digital download
iOS / Android Summer 2026 Cross-play supported
Nintendo Switch 2 Confirmed Backward compatible

The Nintendo Switch version arrives first in April 8, 2026, with cross-platform play between Switch and mobile devices confirmed for later in 2026. Both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 consoles are supported.

2. Early Purchase Bonuses

Players who download and play Pokémon Champions before August 31, 2026 will receive a Dragonite directly in their in-game mailbox.

Additionally, by progressing through the game, players can obtain the Dragonite Mega Stone through the first season Battle Pass—not as a direct download bonus.

A special campaign rewards players who transfer specific Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Z-A via Pokémon HOME:

Pokémon (from Legends Z-A) Mega Stone Reward
Chesnaught Chesnaughtite
Delphox Delphoxite
Greninja Greninjite
Eternal Flower Floette Floettite

How to claim: Store the eligible Pokémon from Pokémon Legends: Z-A in Pokémon HOME, then bring them to Pokémon Champions as visitors—the Mega Stones will be delivered to the in-game mailbox.

3. Pokémon HOME Integration: What You Need to Know

Pokémon Champions fully supports Pokémon HOME connectivity, allowing players to transfer existing Pokémon from compatible titles. This is a critical feature for competitive players who have invested in previous games.

Transfer Rules

Action Allowed? Notes
Transfer Pokémon from HOME to Champions ✅ Yes Only Pokémon appearing in Champions' roster
Transfer Pokémon from Champions to HOME ❌ No Champions-origin Pokémon stay in Champions
Transfer trained Pokémon back to HOME ✅ Yes Training results are retained
Move compatibility issues ⚠️ Adjustable Pokémon learn new moves via in-game training

If a transferred Pokémon knows moves incompatible with Champions, it must learn new moves through training. However, training results persist when returned to HOME.

Compatible Source Games

Pokémon from the following titles can be transferred via Pokémon HOME:

  • Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A
  • Pokémon Sword & Shield
  • Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl
  • Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen (Switch eShop re-release)
  • Pokémon GO

4. Free-to-Start Model: How Monetization Works

Pokémon Champions adopts a free-to-start model with optional paid content. Players can access core battle features at no cost.

Available for Free

  • Ranked battles (level-based matchmaking)
  • Casual battles
  • Private lobbies (up to 12 players, 4 simultaneous matches)
  • Roster Ranch recruitment

Paid Features

Feature Details
Battle Pass Free and paid tiers; paid tier includes Mega Stones and exclusive Pokémon
Membership Subscription Increased box storage, extra team slots, exclusive missions, additional battle music
+Starter Pack One-time purchase: 50 box slots (30→80), 50 Training Tickets, 30 Recruitment Tickets, Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee battle theme

Important: Victory Points (VP)—the currency used to recruit permanent Pokémon—cannot be purchased with real money. VP is earned exclusively through ranked battles.

Storage Limitations

Default box storage is 30 Pokémon slots. The +Starter Pack expands this to 80, and the membership subscription offers further expansion.

5. Game Modes and Features

Battle Modes

Mode Description
Ranked Battles Skill-based matchmaking; earn VP
Casual Battles Practice and experiment with teams
Private Lobbies Create rooms for up to 12 players; 4 simultaneous matches

Roster Ranch (Pokémon Recruitment)

Players can recruit new Pokémon through the Roster Ranch system.

  • Free daily recruit: One free Pokémon per day from a random selection
  • Additional recruits: Use Victory Points (VP) to recruit more Pokémon
  • Trial-to-permanent: Pokémon recruited with VP begin as trial members; additional VP or resources are required to keep them permanently

This system encourages daily engagement and provides a stable acquisition path for players without access to previous main series games.

Training System

Players can modify their Pokémon using VP:

  • Adjust move sets
  • Distribute EV points
  • Modify nature
  • Change abilities

Note

Individual Values (IVs) are no longer randomized in Pokémon Champions. All Pokémon now have perfect IVs (31) by default, shifting the focus toward strategy and training rather than stat micromanagement. All training modifications consume VP.

VP Shop

Use Victory Points to purchase:

  • Mega Stones (including Dragonite Mega Stone, Charizardite, and all confirmed Mega Stones)
  • Held items (Choice items, Leftovers, Focus Sash, etc.)
  • Battle music tracks for customization

Trainer Customization

Players can customize:

  • Outfits
  • Pre-battle poses
  • Pokéball throw animations
  • Victory animations
  • Battle music selection

7. Important Clarifications

Pokémon Champions is Not Pokémon Showdown

Unlike pure battle simulators, Pokémon Champions is a full game with progression systems. Players must earn VP through battles to recruit, train, and optimize their Pokémon. This design aims to onboard a wider audience while maintaining competitive depth.

Shiny Pokémon Status

Official sources have not yet confirmed whether Shiny Pokémon will be available in Pokémon Champions. This will be updated as more information becomes available.
